Far Cry 6 (releasing on 7th October on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Stadia and PC)

Far cry 6 video game

The Far Cry series trades on fun gunplay, enthralling villains, and a setting that is realistic enough to allow for immersion but light enough that it doesn’t feel too close to the real world.

Far Cry 6 offers no change to that formula; your mission is to liberate the island of Yara from El Presidente.

For fun gunplay, this offering has guns with interchangeable, scrappy parts. This grants a higher degree of customisable skills depending on your playstyle and adds to the underdog feeling of your mission.

El Presidente Anton Castillo (played by Giancarlo Esposito!) makes an excellent villain, deadpan through countless acts of evil. His speeches, denouncing the locals who do not support him as ‘fake Yarans’ provide a thematic refrain throughout the fastpaced campaign.

If you fancy a fun journey through a fresh adventure, aided by several well fleshed out characters, Far Cry 6 is a great buy this October.

Back 4 Blood (releasing on 12th October on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and PC)

Back 4 Blood video game

Back 4 Blood is a spiritual sequel to the classic co-op Zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2. The game has added several small improvements, along with several new enemies, in order to keep the game fresh (and of course, to avoid any pesky lawsuits!).

The first of these improvements is more customisability – each player has access to a series of ‘cards’ which change the way their character plays, by either focusing on melee, scouting, support, or shooting. In addition, every gun has a variety of attachments which can improve certain attributes.

In a welcome addition, you can now revive dead teammates at certain points in a mission, and collectable currency means you can upgrade your character permanently in between missions.

If you miss calling out shouts to your teammates as you fight your way through zombie hordes, Back 4 Blood is a quality addition to the genre.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (releasing on 26th October on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch and PC)

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy video game

The first Square Enix Marvel collaboration did not review well, due to being an excessively grindy live-service model.

On the back of that, the GotG game has reverted to a single player, story focused game centred around telling a story rather than profiteering. Even though the look and voice of the characters may be similar to the Marvel movies, they’re definitely different – and it keeps the story fresh.

Whilst the player only controls Star Lord, the whole gang is here, and each helps in combat. They even have special abilities you can activate, allowing the feel of a team working together to take you through the game. Interestingly, you can use voice lines to motivate your team, with bonuses being added if you pick one that is narratively justified. In the story, you can pick options of several choices to allow you to lead the Guardians your way.

Perhaps most like Mass Effect, if you are a fan of the Guardians comics and narrative led action, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy could be a brill buy for you.
