Broadband speed test in my area

Use the speed checker tool below to see what download and upload speeds you are receiving.

To get an accurate picture of the speeds being delivered to your router, avoid testing the speed through WiFi. Ideally, you’ll need to perform a wired speed-test instead.

A wired speed test involves connecting a PC or laptop directly to the router via an ethernet cable.

How to check broadband speed in my area

  1. Click ‘GO’ on our broadband speed test tool
  2. Wait a few seconds
  3. See the exact download and upload speeds you’re on right now

Once you’ve got your speed test results, you might decide that you want to change broadband providers. We have a guide all about switching providers in your area to get the best internet speeds.

How to check your broadband speed and make sure it’s accurate

  1. Pause any big downloads
For example, if you’ve got any big files downloading or any videos being sent or received, pause the download to get a realistic result.
  2. Check that no other devices are using your network
Turn your TV and all game consoles off momentarily, or at the very least turn off their connection.
  3. Switch off any email, messenger or other apps
They will be using your internet in the background so you’ll need them paused for a realistic speed. That includes Facebook Messenger, music apps and so on.
  4. Run the tests a few times
If you’re worried the first time was a fluke, try running the tests up to 3 times, or even try it at different times in the day because it might be that you are slightly affected by network congestion.

FAQs: Using our broadband speed test

Your internet speed is how many megabits of data every second you can download. The more megabits per second (Mbps), the faster your connection is. This means your pages should load faster and any online streaming or Netflix watching you do will have less buffering.

There are a few speed checker tools you can use to test your WiFi speed on your iPhone, like the two below.

TrafficMonitor is also a great option that you can get from the App Store. Once you’ve downloaded it, open the app, and tap the speed meter. It uses real-time data to tell you about your internet speed.

It also looks at other devices in your network so you can get an accurate picture. It then tells you your current speed. Under the ‘data usage’ tab, you’ll see the upload and download speed over a month, today’s data and yesterday’s data.

The average UK download speed was 50Mbps, according to Ofcom’s March 2021 data. But your download and upload speeds can depend on:

  • where you live
  • how many people are using the internet at the same time as you
  • what you, and others, are using the broadband connection for

Airband is proud to be a rural internet service provider. We offer fibre broadband packages and fixed wireless broadband to those of you who’re living in slightly more remote parts of the UK. That includes Devon, Somerset, Cheshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Wales too.

Our fibre broadband packages offer download speeds from 150Mbps up to 900Mbps.

Choose between:

Your broadband could be slow if:

  • The website you’re on is experiencing an unusually high amount of traffic
  • You’ve got a software running or files downloading behind the scenes
  • There are a few of you all using the same internet connection at once
  • You’ve got thick walls between you and your router which is blocking the signal
  • You’re a particularly far distance from the router
  • Your internet cable might be split or broken
  • Your device potentially needs an upgrade
  • Your router could be outdated
  • Viruses on your device could be slowing it down

“I’ve tried all of these, and it’s still very slow”

Test a few different websites on your current connection. If other websites seem quick and it’s just one website that’s a fair bit slower, it’s more than likely just a very slow website.

But if most websites you access are slow to load and use as well, your broadband speeds are likely poor.

Use our broadband speed checker to see your upload and download speed.

Your ping is how fast your connection reacts to anything you do. It’s measured in milliseconds (ms). For example, a fast ping means you’re less likely to get any lag in a video game.

Find out why is your ping so high.

Your jitter, or jitter frequency, is how much your ping varies over time.

Download speed is how fast you can get information from the internet based on your current connection. Different broadband providers will offer different average speeds for both upload and download speeds.

Upload speed is how fast you can send information from the internet based on your current connection.

ADSL stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line. It’s one of the types of broadband connections available. However, it’s a standard (and outdated) type of broadband, which means ADSL broadband services are set up using traditional copper cables from the telephone exchange near your property.

Full fibre broadband is better than ADSL, there’s no question about it. That’s because fibre-to-the-premises doesn’t rely on copper telephone lines, which is what ADSL is, if that’s what your getting through your broadband provider.

Fibre-to-the-premises broadband is what it says on the tin; it’s a full fibre connection all the way from the exchange to your property. And fibre is capable of much faster speeds and is more reliable than copper.

The best way to check if your broadband provider is experiencing an outage is to check their network status page.

If there is, or has been, an outage, it will tell you any details you need to know about the broadband outage.

First thing’s first, when you get your speed test results, it’s always best to run these speed tests at least three times, at different times of day. That way, you can be sure they’re accurate.

Once you’ve run this test and you’re not getting the broadband speeds you’d like, act now.

Secondly, broadband speeds vary when you’re looking at different broadband providers. So, if you’re only looking at broadband providers such as Virgin Media, BT or another, remember that it’s always best to shop around.

Actual speeds may vary from the advertised speed of your service, particularly at peak times and the actual speed you experience may be lower than estimated. This is due to a number of factors that may not be within our control and include your use of WiFi, the device you are using, your internal wiring and the number of users online and accessing a particular website. At peak times, high usage e.g. due to major sporting events, may cause congestion.
