How to setup our Linksys Velop MX4000 Series WiFi 6 router

“The Linksys Velop MX4000 Series WiFi 6 System supports the latest Wi-Fi® 6 (802.11ax) standard to deliver next-level streaming and gaming.  It offers faster Wi-Fi performance for lag-free online gaming and simultaneous streaming to any device.” – Linksys

When you have a fibre connection installed with Airband, you will be provided with a Linksys Velop MX4000 Series WiFi 6 System (RRP £250) free of charge, which will give you the best possible coverage around your home.

With the Fibre 150 and 300 packages, you will get one Linksys Velop MX4000 Series WiFi 6, router – also known as a node. You’ll get two if you choose Fibre 600 or Fibre 900.

With the Fibre 900 broadband package, you will be given two routers to maximise the coverage around your home and use the full potential of your ultrafast connection.

The engineer who visits your property will set up the router for you, in the best possible area of your home to get the best overall signal and coverage, so there is no need for you to set up the system yourself.

For most homes, the range of one node will be more than enough, however if you have a particularly large or unusually laid out house, adding on another node(s) is always an option.

These can be purchased online and can be added to your existing system in no time, using the Linksys app.

Use the following instructions to set up a Linksys node.

  9. Connect your node to your modem or source of internet. You will be prompted that the node is going begin the setup process, make sure you keep your phone nearby.
  10. Once this is complete, you will be asked to set up a Linksys account within the app.
  11. You will be asked to set up a WiFi name and password. You can use the ones provided on the base of the router or create your own.
  12. Once that is done, the app will set up the new WiFi for you and ask you to go in the device WiFi settings and connect to it. Reopen the app after you have done this.
  13. You will be asked to select which room the node is in for your future reference within the app (handy if you are setting up multiple nodes).
  14. You will see a success screen. After this, there will be an option to add another node.
  15. To set up another node, click yes and follow the same process. If not, click no thanks.

Linksys router FAQ

Linksys Velop MX4000 Series WiFi 6 System

Does Linksys Velop replace router?

Yes, the Linksys Velop system is a complete replacement for your old router.

How many Linksys Velop nodes can I use?

You can add as many Velop nodes to your home as you would like, there is no limit.

However, too many nodes can affect wireless performance. It is always best to install the minimum number of nodes required to get adequate coverage around your home.

Is dual band better than tri band?

No, a tri band system is better than a dual band system.

A Tri-band router includes two 5GHz bands and one 2.4GHz band — that’s 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 5GHz. It has double the bandwidth on the 5GHz frequency, compared to a dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz) router.

What’s the point of a tri-band router?

A tri-band router uses 3 different WiFi frequency bands and automatically connects your device to the fastest and least crowded network.

The benefit is that you’ll be able to do your heaviest bandwidth-using tasks, such as 4K streaming and online gaming, without any problems or glitches anywhere in the house.

What is WiFi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation of Wi-Fi. It uses new technology to help devices connect to the internet more efficiently, speeding up your connection.

How far apart can Velop nodes be?

We recommend placing one node on each floor if you have more than one.

What is the range of Linksys Velop nodes?

The Linksys Velop System has a range of up to 2,700 sq ft per node.

How do I update my Linksys router firmware?

We recommend that you enable automatic firmware upgrades for your Linksys Velop router. Updating your Velop system’s firmware keeps your WiFi features current and fixes any potential bugs or performance issues.

By default, automatic firmware updates will be enabled.

If you would like to check, open your Linksys app, open the menu, go to Network Administration and you should see Automatic Firmware Updates switched on.

If you turn OFF Automatic Firmware Updates, you will be prompted when a new firmware release is available.  When this happens, tap Update now to upgrade the firmware.

We recommend leaving automatic updates on as older versions of firmware can drastically affect performance.

How do I check a node’s current firmware version?

The firmware version can be found in the Linksys app on the Network Administration screen.

How can I reset a Velop node to factory defaults?

To reset your node to its factory defaults, press and hold the reset button until the light on top of the node turns red, fades and flashes bright red.

We only recommend doing this if you have been instructed by one of our support team, you could lose your connection entirely if you reset your node without needing to.

How do I change WiFi name on Linksys router?

To change the WiFi name and password on your Linksys Velop router:

  1. Log into the Linksys app
  2. On the dashboard, tap the Menu icon.
  3. Tap WiFi Settings.
  4. Tap the field you want to change then tap Save.

Will Linksys Velop provide a service all around my property?

Yes, one Linksys Velop will provide more than enough coverage for most homes. However, if you have a particularly large or unusually laid-out home, purchasing and adding another node(s) to your system is always an option.

Even in smaller properties, the construction of the building may contain materials that can block WiFi, if you find that your WiFi signal drops significantly when you leave the room that the router is in, it may be that your property has these materials.

Does it have enough ports to plug into Sky and VoIP?

Yes, the Velop router comes with three gigabit-capable ethernet ports.

Will it work with Sky Q?

Yes, the Linksys system works with Sky Q, however some configuration changes may be required.

Will WiFi extenders work with it?

Yes, you can “mix and match” WiFi extenders with the Linksys Velop system.

However, we strongly recommend using only Linksys Velop nodes with your system, as your network will be synchronised, and you will notice that WiFi extenders are not as effective.
