What is PPPoE?

PPPoE is an acronym for ‘Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet’. It is a networking protocol which manages how data travels over a network. In most situations, it refers to the link between the router inside a customer’s house and the access to the internet from their internet service provider (ISP).

In layman’s terms, PPPoE is a series of instructions which tells your router how it connects to the wider Internet. This established relationship allows for several functions. PPPoE means that your router has a unique log-in to your internet service provider and prevents any unauthorised access. To further protect your data, PPPoE also means that your data can be encrypted as it passes betweenyour router and the internet, and that only the two set access points have the key to decrypt it.

Finally, the firmly defined nature of PPPoE means that the data you are demanding from and sending to the wider internet can be compressed. This allows for greater traffic between yourself and the Internet for the same bandwidth, speeding up your connection.

When a customer is installed by Airband, PPPoE is set up by the install engineer, and then our Customer Support will help guide everyone through the final steps if necessary.

To recap, Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet is a network protocol which enables your home router to access the Internet. This specific relationship allows for authentication, encryption, and compression.
