Super fast light trails

While you might not have the fastest internet in the world connected to your home network, you may still be wondering what you’re missing out on.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the fastest internet speeds ever recorded, which countries have the fastest internet and why, and what the fastest internet in the United Kingdom is.

Fastest internet speed in the world

Fastest internet speed recorded in the world

The fastest internet speed ever recorded is 319 Tereabits per second (Tbps).

This world record was achieved by researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.

The long-haul transfer of data took place over 3,001 kilometres.

Previously, the record for the fastest internet speed was held by researchers at the University College of London with 178Tbps.

Most domestic connections are measured in megabits per second (Mbps); there are a thousand megabits in a gigabit and a thousand gigabits in a terabit.

So, the record speed is incredibly fast in comparison to a domestic connection!

Fastest internet available in the world

The fastest internet widely available domestically in the world has a download speed of 2000Mbps (2Gbps), provided mainly in the USA by Google Fibre or Xfinity.

Fastest internet available in the UK

The fastest internet widely available in the UK is 1Gigabit per second (1Gbps), which is 1000 Megabits per second (1000Mbps). This is often referred to as Gigabit internet.

Airband currently offer fibre broadband packages up to 900Mbps. Use our coverage checker to see if you are in range.

Country with the fastest internet speed in the world

The country with the highest internet speed, or the fastest overall connection is Jersey, with a mean internet speed of 274.27Mbps.

Five countries with the fastest internet connection in the world:

  1. Jersey – 274.21Mbps
  2. Liechtenstein – 211.26Mbps

These countries are all very small, or islands in Western Europe, which means that it is much easier to achieve full fibre coverage.

Who has the fastest internet in the world?

Jersey has the fastest internet in the world, getting 274.21Mbps.

Rank Country Internet speed
1 Jersey 274.21Mbps
2 Liechtenstein 211.26Mbps
3 Iceland 191.83Mbps
4 Andorra 164.66Mbps
5 Gibraltar 151.34Mbps

What is the fastest internet in the world?

The fastest type of internet connection in the world is full fibre, also known as FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).

FTTP, or full fibre can achieve much faster speeds than traditional copper or DSL connections, and blended FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), because there is no contention.

What is the difference between FTTP and FTTC?

That is why Airband uses FTTP for all of our fibre broadband connections. We have a range of fibre packages available. Use the coverage checker to see if you can get a better speed with us.
