8 myths around switching broadband provider

Myth 1: It takes too long and is way too complicated

With 22% of people in the ISP Review study having “never changed their provider”, it’s not surprising that people tend to think moving from an old provider to a new one is just too much fuss. The reality is that an Ofcom study reports that it takes less than 16 days to finalise the whole switch process, and almost 95% is all done online, and on time.

Myth 2: I’ll lose internet during the switch

Gone are the days when you had to contact your old provider and then get in touch with the new one, and do things yourself from start to end. Normally, nowadays, the new broadband provider can sort everything out for you. And you won’t typically be without WiFi access for days on end like it might have been historically. It might be a mere few minutes, or at worst up to an hour.

Ofcom found over 90% of broadband orders get fully sorted on time.

Myth 3: The internet won’t be as fast

Of course, you wouldn’t want to change to a new ISP, and then be getting worse speeds. This is a very common worry when it comes to moving to a new provider. But actually, if you choose the provider who can give you the right speed your household needs, this shouldn’t happen.

Myth 4: It’s too expensive

As well as the worry of the process taking too long, lots of us understandably don’t want to over-pay to switch to a new provider. But did you know that a lot of the time, a new broadband package can actually be cheaper than your current one? So it could be worth considering just to see if you’re paying too much and do want to switch to a cheaper contract.

Myth 5: The options are too confusing

Nearly 60% of 25-34 year olds in 2020 found the variety of choices “overwhelming”. When there is too much information to deal with, it’s completely natural to be put off and just stick with the speeds you’re getting at the moment. There are a lot of providers out there, so you might feel like you don’t know where to start. Let’s simplify it.

First, think about what internet speeds you need or want to get.

  • How many people use the internet in your household?
  • How often is it used?
  • What’s it used for, Zoom calls and streaming movies?

If there are lots of you in one house relying on the internet lots for work, you’ll need a faster connection than if there’s only one of you in your house and you rarely use the WiFi. Check out this blog on ‘how much broadband do I need?’ to guide you.

Double check what you’re currently paying and consider a budget. Then, check out whether you’re in range. Use this broadband coverage checker. That way, you’ll be able to choose deals that provide the speed you require.

Myth 6: It’s likely the best deal with my current provider

Signing up for broadband is a big deal. So, you likely invested plenty of time and effort into choosing the right one at the time. But it’s probable that there are even better deals out there now. In fact, broadband contracts can often increase their prices at the end of the 12 month or 18 months. The monthly price can actually go up by over 50%, some up to 80%.

So, it won’t cost you a penny to check your options, and you could end up making a choice that means you save money in the long run.

Myth 7: I’ve just moved home so I don’t want the hassle

Moving house is one of life’s biggest stressful processes. So you might think it’s not a good time to start looking at broadband prices. You’ll no doubt want to relax as soon as possible in your new place! Well, it’s actually really easy. If this is you, use our guide to moving home and broadband.

Myth 8: I’ll need a phone line to switch provider

Our final myth is that you’ll need a phone line to change your ISP. But you might be surprised to know that you don’t need one. You can find out more information on this in our guide: do you need a phone line to get broadband?
