Fibre optic light cables for superfast broadband

Fibre is the future. And if you’re wondering what we mean by that, it’s that fibre optic cables have replaced the old, outdated copper cables to bring you the futuristic fibre broadband we see today.

So, how does it all work? Maybe you’re considering what are the pros of fibre optics compared to the old metal cables? Or perhaps you’re wondering if there are any negatives to using fibre broadband?

Either way, we’ve answered everything you need to know in our quick-fire guide to fibre broadband.

The future of fibre optic cable

A futureproof broadband solution has been in increasing demand since Openreach announced its copper switch-off. By late 2025, they’re due to stop selling broadband that uses the old copper technology, unless you’re in a location where you physically can’t get access to a fibre optic network.

Since the announcement, and since the need for greater speed has increased, it’s no wonder people are looking for an alternative broadband solution for the future. And luckily, they’ve found the answer with full fibre broadband – with greater speed potential and reliability like no other – it’s next-level broadband that’s built for the future.

Advantages of fibre optic cables

Fibre optic cable has greater bandwidth than copper cables

Copper cables offer very limited bandwidth. But when you’re on the fibre optic network infrastructure, it can carry much more on the same diameter as it has greater bandwidth.

Fibre optic cables carry signals at a much faster rate than copper wires

Fibre optic cable use light signals to transmit data, which is about 30% slower than the speed of light (pretty fast for carrying data!).

Fibre optic cable can be more secure, and safer

Unlike copper connections, fibre optic cabling shouldn’t be impacted by the weather.

If there is severe weather, drastic changes in temperature, or a leak, these factors can have a negative impact on electromagnetic interference if you have copper cable delivering your broadband.

This is what can cause interruptions in your data transmission, but the great thing about fibre optic cables is that it’s not impacted by EMI (electromagnetic interference).

Fibre broadband cables don’t radiate electromagnetic energy, so they won’t be a safety hazard like copper cables could be if they’re very worn and not installed properly, meaning they’re especially perfect for carrying your sensitive data.

Fibre optic cables are much more reliable

Optical fibres give you the most secure method. They’re a much thinner and much lighter cable, but don’t be fooled, they can actually handle more pressure than the old metal wires too.

Optical fibre means the wires are less likely to break or get damaged, plus you’ll get better broadband. What’s not to love?!

Fibre optic cable can carry signals much further

Did you know that traditional cabling of copper cables can only carry signals up to roughly 320 feet? That’s why the new fibre network infrastructure gives you a significant advantage over the old internet cables, as they can carry signals as far as 25 miles!

But it’s important to keep in mind that the actual distance for your house might depend on the type of cable our engineers use, the wavelength, as well as other factors too.

So, not only can fibre carry electrical signals at very high speeds, it can carry them at much longer transmission distances too. Win-win!

Are there any disadvantages to getting fibre optic instead of copper cables?

We don’t think there are! Fibre is faster, stronger and more reliable than old copper cables. Its potential to improve speeds and capability in the future is worlds apart from copper too, as the speeds and service you receive from copper are and always will be very limited.

When can I join the fibre optic network?

We’re working full speed ahead to roll-out our fibre broadband across our coverage areas, so everyone can benefit from the fast fibre speeds they need as soon as possible – even in the most remote and rural parts of the country.

After all, it’s our mission to bring less signal degradation and faster internet speeds, so you can get connected, and stay happily connected with us too.

Is a fibre optic network better for gaming than the old copper wire?

Yes! You’ll get faster download and upload speeds and better data transmission. That means you won’t experience all the bad lagging you can get if you’re not on fibre.
