How do I use WiFi Calling?

Traditionally, calls from mobiles rely on mobile phone signal provided by masts situated all over the country, but as you know (and may suffer from!), you’re not always in a great service area – particularly if you live or work rurally.

What is WiFi Calling?

WiFi Calling is a service for Android and iOS smartphones that allows you to make and receive calls (and send messages) over a WiFi connection – no traditional phone signal required!

Who can get Wifi Calling?

Android and iOS smartphone users should be able to get Wifi Calling.

Why use WiFi Calling?

WiFi Calling comes in really handy when you can’t quite catch good signal. Have you ever been:

  • In an old building with thick walls and can’t get signal?
  • On a train/tube journey underground?
  • In a remote area where networks don’t reach there yet?

That’s where WiFi Calling comes in. It means you can make WiFi calls, if you don’t have a phone signal.

What about signal boosting devices?

Since WiFi calling has been developed, signal boosting devices are seen as a secondary option as they are known to suffer from a lot of intermittency and cause interference.

It’s also worth noting that, while signal boosting devices (such as Vodafone Sure Signal) work in most cases on the Airband network, we cannot guarantee that they will work, and do not provide support on such devices.

Which networks allow WiFi Calling?

UK networks that currently offer WiFi calling are EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three (some smaller networks too). Please check with your network, if you’re unsure.

It’s worth noting that not all smartphones have WiFi Calling ability. If this is the case, don’t panic! You can download easy to use applications that offer WiFi Calling and Messaging, for example, WhatsApp and Skype.

How do I enable WiFi Calling?

Go to your phone settings and find the Wifi Calling option, which might be under WiFi Settings. If it’s available, you can enable the button. Easy. Depending on what smartphone you’ve got, you should be able to find your WiFi Calling functionality there. Once it’s set up, you can use WiFi to make calls.
