Rural broadband specialist Airband is celebrating after being shortlisted in the inaugural INCA awards.
INCA, which represents altnet ISPs, created seven award categories in a bid to find what it describes as “the “heroes of the UK’s digital infrastructure industry.”
Airband has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Contributor category, which recognises an “organisation or individual who has done the most to advance independent networks in the last year.”
Red Peel, director of Airband, said he was delighted that the hard work, dedication and innovation of the Airband team had been recognised.
“With growing interest and awareness of the need for a blend of technologies to bring all of the UK up to superfast speeds, the INCA awards recognise the innovation at work in the telecoms sector, as smaller companies fill in the gaps with remarkable flexibility and adaptability.
“I feel very proud of the Airband team and all the hard work that we have put in to be able to make a meaningful difference to rural communities,” he said.
Airband Community Internet (Airband) was founded in 2009 and has been working since then to change the face of rural broadband and empower rural communities, helping to smash the UK’s so-called ‘digital divide’.
2018 has been a year of huge transformation for Airband – it attracted a game-changing £16m investment, won two key contracts for Shropshire and The Marches, whilst also progressing with seven other network projects, in Devon & Somerset, Herefordshire, Shropshire, The Midlands, and Wales – where it continues as an infill partner for the Welsh Government Superfast Cymru programme contracts – including one from Fastershire to deliver a FTTP service to clusters across Herefordshire and Gloucestershire over the next two years.
