March’s best upcoming game releases:

Balan Wonderworld:
releasing on 26th March on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch and PC

Balan Wonderworld video game

Balan Wonderworld is a 3D platformer from veteran developer and artist combo Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima. Characters follow the maestro, Balan, through a dream-like setting called the Wonderworld; all while donning over 80 different costumes, each of which grants a different ability to help traverse the world. This mechanic may remind some of Super Mario which is a helpful comparison – its colourful palette and variety of themes is the essence of this game.

The real value of the game comes in its presentation. The musical backing is weaved into set pieces, providing a satisfying synchronicity to movement.

There’s also a wide variety of other gimmicks throughout the game: exploration is rewarded with story sections and the chance to play as Balan. There’s also a hub world that uses a separate mechanic, revolving around colouring in small helpers called Tims to reach new areas. Fun right?!

If you enjoy spectacle in your games – easy to play and even easier on the eye – then Balan will provide you a nice experience. However, if you prefer games that ask questions of the people who pick them up, it might be best to look elsewhere.

Monster Hunter Rise:
releasing on 26th March on Switch

Monster Hunter Rise video game

The recent Monster Hunter World never made it to Switch, but this game is still more of a sequel than an equivalent. The game builds upon the series’ classic game loop of fighting-varied behemoths, each of which allows you to be better prepared to beat the next.

Like its predecessor, the game is centralised around a single word: Rise. This refers to the verticality which is being added to the game. Firstly, the player has a new companion; the Palamute, which can scale walls as well as help in combat. Secondly, the Wirebug gadget enables grappling and swinging traversal – as well as the ability to ride some smaller monsters into battle! The Wirebug also has new interactions with each of the game’s 14 weapons, creating brand new combos to learn.

Monster Hunter is a very popular series and this game looks to be no different- a month long demo released in January was so popular it crashed the Nintendo eShop when released! If you enjoy mastering complex combos and taking down big beasts, this might be a release for you.

It Takes Two:
releasing on 26th March on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and PC

It Takes Two video game

It Takes Two is an action-adventure platformer which follows a married couple named Cody and May, who are turned into dolls by a spell. The pair follow advice from a magical couple’s therapist, to repair their relationship and return to reality. Developed by Hazelight Studios (the team behind A Way Out); the game can only be played in split-screen co-op, either online or locally.

Gameplay borrows mechanics from several games to make a flowing adventure, but the unique story premise is what sets it apart. Video games rarely touch romance, and flawed relationships are even more rare than that. In a very generous move, It Takes Two also introduced Friend’s Pass- a method by which any player who owns a copy of the game can invite a friend who doesn’t own a copy to play with them online for free. Win-win!

Whether you’re looking for a distinctive co-op experience, or want a game designed for play with a partner, it’ll be well worth grabbing a copy of It Takes Two!
